The title of the show states the main physical feature of the lead character, Betty. Betty Suarez, the 22 years old Mexican-American women is perceived by most people as plain “ugly”: she has a poor sense of style, which makes her unattractive, she wears braces, is clumsy and most times socially awkward. However, after graduating college, she lands a job at the prestigious fashion magazine “Mode”, as the Personal Assistant of Daniel Meade.

Daniel is the editor-in-chief of the magazine, a womanizer and often verbally cruel to the inexperienced Betty. Eventually, Betty and Daniel become friends and support one another through events concerning their professional and personal lives.

Nonetheless, Betty is very determined and does her job thoroughly and skillfully.

The TV series was created by Silvio Horta and is based on Fernando Gaitán’s Colombian soap opera, famous in the 90’s called“Yo soy Betty, la fea”. (I am Betty, the ugly).

Obviously there are some people who wish to harm Betty and Daniel such as Creative Director Wilhelmina Slater, whose plan is to steal Daniel’s job and take overthe company. Wilhelmina is assisted in her mischievous plan by Marc St. James and Mode receptionist Amanda Sommers.
