The show humorously portrays the institution of family today, with all the modern society challenges it faces, telling the story of three easy to recognize examples of modern families.
Phil and Claire are married and have three children: two girls Haley and Ariel and one son, Luke.
Claire is a housewife preoccupied by giving a healthy education to her children. Admitting she was a bit of a wild child, she resumes her mission as a mother to keeping her children from making her mistakes. In her own words “If Hayley never wakes up on a beach in Florida half naked, I’ve done my job”. Phil is a real estate agent, the type of very relaxed cool dad, leaving Claire with all the grown-up responsibility of raising their children.
Mitchell and Cameron are a gay couple that have just adopted a Vietnamese little girl, Lily.Mitchell and Claire are Jay Prichett’s children.
Jay and Gloria are the third family whose story appears in the show. Gloria is a Colombian good looking woman, 20 years younger than Jay with an overweight pre-teenage son, Manny. Ed O’Neill, known as Al Bundy from the famous comedy of the 90′s “Married, with children”, is the patriarch, the head of the family, easily bored and moody.
The comedy takes the form of a mockumentary, with the events being presented in a documentary style. The characters often talk directly into the camera when explaining certain situations or events.
