“How I met your mother” is a very successful comedy series now airing its 7th season. The show is constructed on retrospectives of Ted Mosby, while he is telling his two children the complicated story of how he had met their mother and of the events that led to their meeting. The show has won five Emmy Awards, including a nomination for “Outstanding Comedy Series” in 2009.

This is the show’s main storyline, but each episodes secondarilyfollows the lives of Teds four best friends: Lilly and Marshall, who Ted met in college and who have been together ever since, Barney Stinson, a successful  man with commitment issues and Robin Scherbatsky, a Canadian journalist who moves to New York in search of professional success. The action takes place in New York of the years 2000.

Future Ted (voiced by Bob Saget), the Ted Telling the story to his children, is sometimes an unreliable narrator, having to recall events that happened two decades before the time of the speech. The humor of the show comes from situations and events, as well as from the character’s personality traits.

The cast includes A-list stars such as Allyson Hannigan playing Lilly, Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson and Jason Segel as Marshall.

Perhaps the most popular character of the show is Barney, as Neil Patrick Harris proves to have an extraordinary credibility as a ladies’ man, who constantly looks for pick-up lines and perfects the art of seduction and deceiving of his female “victims”.

He is the actual author of idioms and verbal expressions that become viral, such as “legendary” or “true story”.
