The popular series tells the stories of ordinary people who discover superhuman abilities, transforming them into real life heroes. The show also emphasize how these abilities take effect in the characters’ rather ordinary lives, at least up to the point where they become aware of their superpowers. The series emulates the aesthetic style and storytelling of American comic books, using short, multi-episode story arcs that build upon a larger, more encompassing arc.

The abilities of the heroes vary to a large extent, but all still rooted in the real world and reality. For example, Hiro Nakamura, a programmer at Yamagoto Industries in Tokyo discovers he has the ability to manipulate space and time and is convinced that he can use this power to do good, help human race and change the future.

Hayden Panettiere plays Claire Bennet, a high school cheerleader who has the ability of rapid cellular regeneration making her indestructible. Like her, Nicole Sanders and her entire family, husband and son, discover superpowers such as passing through solid matter, mind reading or control digital technology. Soon, many more normal people discover abilities that can be used to save the world from catastrophes.
