Glee is the name of the succesfull musical comedy-drama television series, responsible for the recent revival of the genre.The action focuses on the high school glee club”New Directions”, under the guidance of Will Schuester, a Spanish Teacher trying to revive the glee club.
The initial main cast encompassed club director and Spanish teacher Will Schuester (played by Matthew Morrison), cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (played by Jane Lynch), guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (played by Jayma Mays), Will’s wife Terri, and eight club members: Rachel Berry, Quinn Fabray, Finn Hudson, Mercedes Jones, Santana Lopez, ArtieAbrams, Tina Cohen Chang and Noah Pukerman.
Sue Sylvester is brilliantly interpreted by Jane Lynch, who portrays a revengefull, mean cheerleading coach who has a problem with the glee club. Mary McNamara for the Los Angeles Times wrote that “Lynch alone makes Glee worth watching”, while Ken Tucker from Entertainment Weekly has called Sue “the greatest Broadway-musical villain to ever co-star in a TV series”.
For her performance in the role, Lynch won the Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film Golden Globe Award in 2011 and the Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Songs covered in the show are released through the iTunes Store during the week of broadcast, and a series of “Glee” albums have been released by Columbia Records. The music of Glee has been a commercial success, with over thirty-six million digital single sales and eleven million album sales worldwide through October 2011.
Neil Patrick Harris, Gwyneth Paltrow, Olivia Newton John, Eve and Britney Spears have been known to guest star the show.
