Dexter Morgan is the show’s title character, known to everybody as a talented bloodstain pattern analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department. However, known only by himself, Dexter hides a second identity: that of a righteous serial killer or an avenging angel.
Orphaned at the age of three due to the brutal murder of his mother, Dexter is adopted by Miami police officer Harry Morgan. After discovering young Dexter’s killing inclination, it is pretty clear to Harry that the need to kill reached Dexter at an early an age and this need will only grow. To keep Dexter from killing innocent people, Harry begins teaching Dexter “The Code”. In this code, Dexter’s victims must be killers themselves who have killed someone without justifiable cause and will likely do so again.
Dexter is therefore conflicted by the two identities and often admits that “Harry is the only one who saw me, really saw me. So he taught me to hide. That’s what’s kept me safe. But sometimes I’m not sure where Harry’s vision of me ends and the real me starts.”
He must also always be sure that his target is guilty, and frequently goes to extreme lengths to get proof of his victim’s guilt. Having access to police files, Dexter is always on a hunt for killers and kills them one by one.
Dexter however is not a justice maker as such. He is a serial killer motivated by a desire to kill, stronger than himself, channeled voluntarily and in a self-controlled manner in a righteous direction. Therefore, Dexter’s true nature will often raise conscience and morality issues extremely difficult to tackle with.
The action is focused primarily on the cases the police department has to solve, and, simultaneously on Dexter’s justified killings. The show has been nominated for 19 Primetime Emmy Awards, 7 Golden Globes (winning 2) and many other.
