The show’s main idea revolves around the traditional role of women in society, also shedding light to the modern implications, understanding and manifestations of the concept. “Desperate housewives” is an intricate story of the lives of a group of female friends, story that starts with a mysterious suicide of a fellow housewife.

The setting of the show is an apparently normal, quiet suburban neighborhood of America. Specifically, the neighborhood is called Wisteria Lane.

The entire story is told by the narrative voice of the suicidal neighbor. The perspective of the narration is also her own, as she clearly interprets facts and makes observations from the point of view of an insider, she herself being a “desperate housewife”.

The women of Wisteria Lane work through domestic struggles and family life, while facing the secrets, crimes and mysteries hidden behind the doors of their beautiful and seemingly perfect suburban neighborhood. Each housewife stands for a typology easy to recognize in today’s modern society, making the show very accessible.

Susan Mayer (played by Terri Hatcher) is a divorced mother with a teenage daughter in search of a new love. Lynette Scavo (played by Felicity Huffman) is a former business woman who gives up a carrier for her family, now exhausted mother of four, and lives to regret her decision. Bree Van de Kamp (played by Marcia Cross) poses as the perfect mother and wife, while struggling to save her marriage and a failed relationship with her son. Gabrielle Solis (played by Eva Longoria) is an ex-model caught up in an unhappy marriage who pushes her into having an affair.
