„Burn notice” tells the story of a spy recently „burned” by the US Government. Michael Westenthus finds himself on the blacklist of special agents, with no money or assets, no influence, no work history, no family, no support and all bridges to his former life and identity burned.

In the opening of the first season of the show, Westen begins with an ironic introspection on the essence of being a spy „Do you have any idea how it’s like being a spy? It’s like sitting at your dentist reception for 24 hours a day: you read magazines, sip a coffee, and, ever so often, someone tries to kill you”. Actually, the entire show is filled with humorous lines, often in the form of self-irony. The narrative voice is that of Westen himself and the action primarily takes place in Miami, Westen’s hometown.

Throughout the show, Westen is consumed with the questions of why and by whom he was put on theblacklistin the first place. But in order to find an answer to his questions and finance his endeavors of finding the truth, he must take on cases (as an unlicensed private investigator) which he will solve using his Special Agent training and skills. In his missions, he is usually assisted by his ex-girlfriend Fiona Glenanne and his friend Sam Axe.
